The CNSC will be receiving $3 million to upgrade its laboratory, as part of the Government of Canada's Budget 2009 economic stimulus package. Treasury Board announced $250 million over the next two years to upgrade federal labs across the country. The funding, which sets aside $2 million dollars in 2009-2010 and an additional $1 million dollars in 2010-2011, will be used to renovate and refit existing vacant lab space at the Natural Resources Canada Limebank Road site in Ottawa.
The CNSC Lab provides laboratory services in support of the Commission’s licensing and compliance activities. It was established in 1978 as an independent lab to validate the quality of measurements of levels of radiation taken by licensees as well as to carry out the calibration of instruments used by CNSC inspectors to detect contamination.
Currently, the CNSC Lab provides services in the following three areas:
- Environmental sample analysis
- Radiological sample analysis
- Radiation instrument calibration and maintenance
