Moderator water spill at Pickering Unit 4 has no impact on the environment or public
On February 24, 2011, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) shut down Pickering Unit 4 in order to investigate increased leakage from a moderator pump seal to the collection system. During the shut down process, the seal degraded further such that moderator water spilled onto the floor of the room and then into a sump. OPG staff entered the room, wearing appropriate protective equipment and isolated the leak. There was no release outside the reactor building and no impact on the environment or public. An investigation into the cause of the problem is underway. The unit will remain shut down until repairs have been completed.
