The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) licenses a uranium refining facility in Blind River, Ontario.

Blind River refinery

The refinery, which Cameco Corporation owns and is licensed to operate, began operating in 1983 and is licensed to convert up to 18,000 tonnes of uranium ore concentrate to uranium trioxide annually. The uranium trioxide is then further processed into uranium dioxide or uranium hexafluoride at Cameco’s uranium conversion facility in Port Hope, Ontario.

CNSC personnel routinely inspect and evaluate the Blind River facilities to verify compliance with regulatory requirements and licence conditions. CNSC personnel also meet periodically with the public, community members and other interested parties to inform them of current and upcoming issues related to regulation of the licensed facilities.

About 65 km northeast of Blind River is Elliot Lake, where several decommissioned uranium mine sites are situated.
