On-the-Job Training Programs

An on-the-job training (OJT) program is essential for developing the skills and abilities of a certified exposure device operator (EDO). Training should be tailored to the needs and learning characteristics of the trainee and the gamma radiography industry. It must also include the development of a strong culture for safety and security. Appendix A in CSA PCP-09, Exposure Device Operator Personnel Certification Guide – Revision 1, provides detailed information regarding OJT program development and the CNSC expectations for EDO candidates and licensees who employ and train them.

EDO candidates

OJT provides the EDO candidate with foundational skills required to become certified as an EDO with a focus on the following broad subject areas:

  1. Safe operational procedures
  2. Regulatory requirements
  3. Security and emergency procedures
  4. Necessary equipment
  5. Occupational health and safety
  6. Radiation protection

The OJT program should consist of at least 320 hours of hands-on instruction on the safe operation of the exposure device, with the vocational training program forming the foundation for the practical knowledge and skills required to perform the job.

All EDO candidates must complete OJT before applying for certification. The CNSC recommends candidates complete:

  • their OJT program, after completing vocational training and prior to attempting any EDO certification examinations
  • the full OJT program (320 hours) within 2 years of starting and with the same licensee

EDO candidates are expected to submit an OJT attestation form signed by an authorized representative of the company where OJT was conducted as a record of successful completion.

Licensees

For guidance on OJT program development, consult the list of training objectives listed in appendix A, section A2 of CSA PCP-09, Exposure Device Operator Personnel Certification Guide – Revision 1.

All supervisors of OJT must have a valid EDO certification while supervising an EDO trainee. It is the responsibility of the licensee to ensure assigned supervisors hold a valid EDO certification at the time of supervision.

Licensees are expected to retain a record of the training received by each worker for the period ending three year after the termination of employment of the worker. The record should include:

  • the full legal name of the EDO candidate
  • the number of OJT hours completed by date
  • OJT topic area(s) covered by date
  • Supervisor (or RSO) sign-off for each topic area

All records may be requested for audit purposes at any time by the CNSC in order to verify training is delivered in accordance with guidance in this document. The CNSC may require evidence that the required knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained by the EDO, through the process of performance-based assessment and program evaluation.
