Safety metrics: Are they measuring up?

Summary of the technical presentation presented at:
2018 CSSE Professional Development Conference
September 16–19, 2018

Prepared by:
Tanya Hewitt
Human Factors Specialist
Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission

Abstract:

Measurement in safety is fairly standard, but rarely questioned. This presentation looks more closely at metrics. Why do we measure? What types of metrics are used? How can they influence behaviour change? Are they useful? These and other questions regarding metrics are addressed, using differing lenses to see the power of metrics from different perspectives. Drawing from literature from a variety of industries, this presentation highlights the concerns with traditional metrics and suggests some innovative alternatives
