Participant Funding for the Regulatory Oversight Report for Uranium and Nuclear Substance Processing Facilities in Canada: 2019 and Cameco Corporation's Vision in Motion Project Update

This participant funding opportunity is open from July 8 to August 7, 2020.

Participant funding notice

The CNSC is offering participant funding to assist Indigenous peoples, members of the public and stakeholders in reviewing two topics and submitting comments on them in writing to the Commission. One topic is CNSC staff’s Regulatory Oversight Report for Uranium and Nuclear Substance Processing Facilities in Canada: 2019 (the report). The other is an update on Cameco Corporation’s (Cameco’s) Vision in Motion project.

Indigenous intervenors may also make oral presentations. This additional opportunity is being made available to Indigenous intervenors in the spirit of reconciliation and in recognition of the Indigenous oral tradition of sharing knowledge. Oral presentations will be made remotely due to potential travel restrictions or limitations relating to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On December 8, 9 and 10, 2020, the CNSC will hold a public meeting where CNSC staff will present the regulatory oversight report to the Commission and will include a plain-language narrative summary as part of the presentation. The report itself will provide an overview of CNSC regulatory efforts related to uranium and nuclear substance processing facilities in 2019. Prior to the presentation of the report, Cameco will provide an update on its Vision in Motion project, as requested by the Commission. In the February 2017 record of decision for the Port Hope Conversion Facility licence renewal, the Commission had requested that Cameco provide an update on the progress of this project approximately two years after the first shipment of Cameco’s waste materials to Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ Long-Term Waste Management Facility.

Up to $25,000 in participant funding will be disbursed among all eligible applicants for the provision of new, distinctive and valuable information through informed and topic-specific interventions to the Commission. PFP applications must clearly demonstrate how the proposed submission will provide the Commission with information directly relating to the report and the regulatory performance of CNSC-licensed uranium and nuclear substance processing facilities during 2019 and/or to the Vision in Motion project update. Funding for travel to the Commission meeting is not within the scope of this funding opportunity.
